Welcome to Bergen, the gateway to the fjords of Norway. As a UNESCO World Heritage City, the
Hanseatic League (started in North German towns one of which was Lubeck which I visited in 2016) was a group of merchant guilds with offices in Bergen. They traded mainly with stock fish (cod that is split and air dried without salt) from Norway and grain from the Baltic countries. We visited some of the buildings still standing along the water’s edge. On Tuesday we went to the Bergen Fish Museum. Norway has the 2nd longest coastline in the world (after Canada) despite being such a small country. We saw a movie where the owner of the seal hunting company explained the history of seal hunting and its’ demise.
